How do you play Klondike Solitaire?
7 tableau columns showing a 3-card descending alternating sequence and foundation piles.
Beginner Tips for Success
- •Prioritize uncovering face-down cards over drawing new stock cards.
- •Do not clear a column without a King ready to occupy it.
- •Keep foundation ranks balanced to hold descending sequences.
- •When choosing between two moves, uncover the column with more hidden cards.
- •Track card orders as you cycle through the deck in Draw 3.
- •Use undo to test alternative branches when moves stall.
Key Strategies & Advanced Techniques
Definition: Prioritizing moves that uncover face-down tableau cards over drawing from the stock pile or moving existing face-up cards.
Example: If you have an 8 of Spades on Column 7 covering 4 hidden cards and another 8 of Spades in the waste pile, always move the 8 from Column 7 onto a Red 9 so the hidden card underneath can be revealed.
Definition: Holding cards in the tableau rather than instantly advancing them to the foundation piles if they might still be needed to park lower opposite-color cards.
Example: If you send the 5 of Spades to the foundation early, you will no longer have a place in the tableau to park a red 4 of Hearts (which requires a black 5). Hold the 5 in the tableau until both red 4s are visible or both red 3s are safely banked.
Definition: Holding off on emptying a column until a face-up King is available to immediately claim the space.
Example: Do not move your last card from a column unless you have a King ready to place there.
